Scarlett is a baby opossum that weighs about 2 pounds.
She is approximately 5 months old and still has her baby hair and baby teeth.
She also has a broken jaw and is blind in at least one eye.
Witnesses told Wildlife Rehab of Greenville that they saw the opossum being beaten with a golf club at a Hilton Head facility, according to a report on WTOC11.
The opossum got her name because “she has scars, but she is still beautiful,” a rescue volunteer told WTOC11.
Wildlife Rehab in South Carolina reported the news about the alleged beating on its Facebook page and is asking for donations to help with her care.
“Scarlett is in the care of a trained rehabber at this time and is receiving excellent medical care. We expect a lengthy recovery period,” the post reads.
As a rehab group, they have no authority to conduct investigations, and have reported the incident to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and to the golf course.
The Facebook post has been shared more than 7,400 times and the group is closing in on $10,000 in donations.
