In 132 years, the groundhog has only not seen his shadow 18 times.
Every Feb. 2, we wait in anticipation for that furry groundhog Punxsutawney Phil to tell us if we’re in for an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
On Groundhog Day, we rely on him to tell us if it’s time to pack up our wool sweaters or if the winter weather is here to stay.
So why not try Phil’s hand at politics? He seems to have the gift of prophecy after all, and with such a tumultuous election right around the corner, it’s hard to know what Nov. 3 has in store.

What do Phil’s past predictions indicate? Will Trump be re-elected?
When looking back at Phil’s predictions over the last century-plus, there’s a pattern we noticed during election years.
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club keeps a record of Phil’s predictions dating back to 1886, and what we found may indicate that the groundhog’s powers go beyond weather — or at least they COULD be LOOSELY intertwined with the 2020 Presidential Election.
Phil saw his shadow 29 times during election years since 1888 — 14 of those times, the winner was the Democratic candidate, and 15 of those times, the winner was Republican.
I know, I know. That’s pretty dead even, but hear me out.
Of the two times Phil did not see his shadow, the Republican candidate won. That was in 1988 with George H.W. Bush, and again in 2016 with President Donald Trump.
So basically, if there’s no shadow, Trump will win. If Phil sees his shadow, odds are even, but Democrats are due for a win to even it out.
And right now, the odds are in Trump’s favor. Meteorologists predict Phil won’t see his shadow because of cloudy skies in the forecasts — predicting an early spring for the second straight year, and a second straight victory for Trump.
