NEWS 4 REPORTER – MARCIE CIPRIANI – YOU BROKE AND I SPOKE WITH THE POLICE CHIEF FROM HOME TONIGHT – WHERE HE IS IN QUARANTINE- AS IS HIS WHOLE DEPARTMENT. WHICH INCLUDES 11 OTHER POLICE OFFICERS. CHIEF BILL SOMBO TELLS 3 OF HIS OFFICERS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID 19 AND ONE I PROBABLE – SO HE HAD TO SHUT DOWN THE DEPT -TO STOP THE SPREAD- AND HE HAS CALLED IN OTHER DEPARTMENTS TO COVER THE COMMUNTY SPEAKING TO ME VIA FACETIME FROM HOME CHIEF BILL SOMBO – SAYS 5 OTHER DEPARTMENTS WILL BE NOT ONLY ANSWERING CALLS FOR ELIZABETH BORO AND WEST ELIZABETH BUT THEY WILL BE PATROLLING TOO. SOMBO SAYS HIS FIRST OFFICER TESTED POSITIVE ON AUGUST 4TH AND HE IMMEDIATLY CLOSED THE DEPT AND BOROUGH BUILDING AND HAS IT AND THEIR POLICE CARS SANITIZED – BUT BEFORE HE REOPENED THE BUILDING 2 MORE OFFICERS TESTED POSITIVE . THE CHIEF SAYS ITS IMPORTANT FOR THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW – THERE IS NO ONE IN THE BUILDING SO THEY SHOULD CALL 911 FOR HELP. I HAVE TESTED NEGATIVE, BUT I AM STILL QUARANTINED BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH ALL FOR THE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE SICK. The department shut down on Aug. 11 after its officers were exposed to the coronavirus. The officers who tested positive are reportedly doing well and are recovering.Three officers tested positive on Aug. 11, as did a member of the borough council.
